POP UP UNITS

Why Retractable Power Belongs on the Drawing Board
Retail parks, shopping centres and mixed-use commercial spaces are increasingly expected to host more than just traditional shopfronts. Market days, seasonal concessions, outdoor dining, pop-up activations and events have become standard features of how these spaces perform commercially. What has not always kept pace is when power provision gets considered in the design process, often left until after the landscaping is already down.
Power requirements are frequently an afterthought, addressed once the hard landscaping scheme is finalised, forcing compromises that undermine the very design the architect or landscape designer has worked hard to deliver. Permanent bollards are an option but interrupt clean sightlines. Surface cabling creates trip hazards and clutter on days when no event is taking place. Retrofitting power after the space is built means digging up finished paving or flooring at cost and disruption to the client. For architects, landscape designers and shopping centre developers, the tension between electrical practicality and open, usable public space has long been solved too late to solve well.
The PUPS01 changes where that decision is made. Specified at the design stage rather than added after the fact, the PUPS01 is a retractable power unit that sits flush and out of sight within the paving until it's needed. When power is required, the unit is raised to working height using a simple winding handle operating a worm screw lifting system, guided smoothly on self-lubricating polythene guides. Once the event, market day or activation is over, the unit lowers back down, leaving the space clear, safe and free of visible infrastructure once again.
Housed within an RBK concrete containment chamber and constructed from AISI304 stainless steel (with AISI316L available on request for more demanding environments), the PUPS01 is engineered to sit within the ground build-up from the outset. Its CEE sockets carry an IP67 rating, and the unit supports up to 125 amps across single or three-phase supply, at 230V/400V and frequencies from 50Hz to 60Hz, in compliance with EN 60947-1 and EN 61439. This makes it straightforward to specify early, coordinate with M&E consultants, and build into hard landscaping plans without the guesswork that comes with retrofitting.
For an architect designing a shopping centre's outdoor event space, this means power can be planned exactly where market stalls, food vendors or seasonal activations will take place, without leaving permanent infrastructure visible on the days the space is simply a place to walk through. For a landscape designer working on a mixed-use courtyard, flexible power can be built into the scheme from day one, ready for whichever event or tenant occupies the space next. For a developer or facilities manager, specifying the PUPS01 early avoids the cost and disruption of retrofitting power after the landscaping is complete and removes the need for noisy, polluting generators even on event days.
The PUPS01 is Pop Up Power Supplies' most versatile unit, suitable for market places, heritage sites, and commercial or industrial environments alike, with the flexibility to supply power to multiple points from a single installation. It has already been specified across a range of UK commercial and public realm projects.
For architects, landscape designers and developers, the PUPS01 resolves a long-standing tension between electrical infrastructure and open public space, by making sure it's never a problem in the first place. Specify it once. Build it in properly. Let the space lead. Pop Up Power Supplies® provides a dependable solution for outdoor commercial and public realm environments across the UK.
