CAERPHILLY CASTLE

23 Dec 2021

Caerphilly Castle is a mediaeval fortification located in Caerphilly in South Wales. The castle was constructed by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th century as part of his campaign to maintain control of Glamorgan. The castle saw extensive fighting between Gilbert, his descendants, and the native Welsh rulers.

The fortress sprawls over a huge area making it the largest castle in Wales. The castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly and has also been used extensively as a backdrop for TV and film. Most recently it can be seen in the popular BBC TV series Merlin. The Caerphilly Castle visitor centre project is part of a capital investment programme by Cadw, Welsh Government’s historic environment service.

Since 2019 the castle has been undergoing a period of redevelopment. The area itself seeped in history and breathtaking surrounding scenery making the castle a nationally significant heritage site. Redevelopment of the castle includes several projects including enhanced visitor facilities, new provision for learning. Themed play areas, improvements for venue hire and visitor use. All redevelopment will ensure the castle's long term sustainability.

Pop Up Power Supplies are pleased to be part of this ongoing redevelopment, their contract with the castle is to provide power solutions for the outdoor areas within the historic grounds. Pop Up Power supplied seven slim IGUs to be submerged into the ground at strategic locations throughout the castle. The Slim IGU service units are robustly-engineered using galvanised high grade structural steel and feature a series of power sockets, which are accessible via a flip-lid when required.

The retractable service power units provide a secure, silent and efficient power supply for all maintenance equipment, stalls and lighting. The recessed flip lid power units are almost invisible which is vital for use within a historic site of such importance. In-ground units consist of a flip lid that is recessed within the ground and covered by the surrounding surface. Only short cables – covered by cable protectors – are visible when equipment is connected and in-use.

The Slim IGU is part of a wide range of retractable, in-ground and bollard units from Pop Up Power Supplies®, which add functionality and adaptability in all kinds of public spaces. Pop Up Power Supplies Ltd provides a range of retractable service units and bollards with electricity /water connection points. Used in public spaces ranging from historic sites, market places, town squares, parks, universities and sports stadia.

George Parker of PUPS, “We've worked with clients up and down the country, providing efficient, sympathetic utility solutions in busy public areas including Chelsea Football Club, Edinburgh Castle, Covent Garden to name a few."

Pop Up Power can also supply electricity through Bollards in a variety of designs to suit the surroundings. For further information please see our website www.popuppower.co.uk or call us on 0208 2270208.
