In the shadow of Covid our city planners and urban landscapers will be looking to re-design our town and cities...
The high street has typically operated both as a social place as well as a commercial hub where communities can meet, make use of the services we have and interact. Over time this function has become less and less as car users have clogged our streets. Our high street has become less of a social hub and more of a thoroughfare, a place of passing and movement. Our pavements have, over time, contracted with trees reduced, benches, shop displays and cafe tables all becoming extinct as the road takes over. The pedestrian or cyclist has been allocated less and less space. In the shadow of Covid and our need to social distance this model clearly will no longer work.
Many cities are increasing outdoor space for use by restaurants, cafes and places to meet and work. Allowing our outdoor time to be exciting and fun, healthy and beneficial. Above all welcoming and socially safe. With many consumers still anxious to shop in store, open-air markets are a creative solution and a way to encourage people to return to the high street. Luxury retailer Selfridges has launched an open-air market behind its flagship store, the Oxford Street branch will host Market on the Mews with a selection of stalls selling food, drink, flowers, plants and homewares. Speaking about the launch, Selfridges stores director Meave Wall said, “The launch of Market on the Mews follows several successful brand installations that we’ve held in that space, with the market giving us the opportunity to create a different shopping experience for our customers this summer. The market is a totally outdoor experience with each stall featuring brilliant independent brands. New brands like Assembly Coffee, Two Tribes Beer and Your London Florist will be available exclusively from Market of the Mews. As well as shopping, visitors to Market on the Mews can also enjoy live entertainment, DJs and fun activities for families and kids.”
It is for events such as these that Pop Up Power Supplies® are used extensively by local authorities, city centre managers and shopping centre operators across the UK, creating bespoke outdoor power solutions for each project. The range of In Ground Power Units, or Flip Lid Units are an extremely safe and reliable option for powering such spaces. Each power unit benefits from a secure lockable lid. This prevents public access increasing safety. Only the cables protrude from the power unit. The cables will be covered by cable protectors which also reduces any hazard. The durable, easy to use units are designed to provide power and other services when you need them, but are hidden when you don’t, so there is no need to hire temporary generators.
