Obviously the need to specify a safe and reliable power source takes precedent, to power outdoor events such as market days or fairs. But external pop up power sockets should be designed in a way where they pose little danger to the public.

Traditional external power sources such as generators, pose various hazards to nearby pedestrians. For a start, they are usually located towards the perimeter of an outdoor event due to logistics and the difficulty in navigating more centrally. This means there are a lot of trailing cables for pedestrians to avoid. Also, generators sometimes have exposed elements or pose the risk of electrocution for pedestrians too.

This is where the outdoor power supply units from Pop Up Power supplies® add value to sub-contractors and architects, looking to design and install an external pop up power sockets in outdoor environments.

Our outdoor power supply units include a range of versatile, discreet, and retractable service units. They can either be raised from the ground and lowered back again when not in use, or can be operated while submerged in the ground with the lids locked.

POP UP POWER SOCKETS FOR OUTDOOR BUILD PROJECTS

Common requirements for external pop up power sockets include:

The first consideration when deciding on an external power supply is what is the purpose, or what are you looking to power? As well as taking into account the surround area.

Are you working on an urban project for a town centre re-development where you need a power supply for regular market days? Or an education project developing an outdoor space within a university to help with their open days?

Pop Up Power Supplies® works closely with architects and contractors to ensure the outdoor power unit is sensitive to the local surroundings. To help us achieve this, we have three main power units in our range:

Each outdoor power unit has its own key advantages and reason for specification, and can accommodate a range of electricity sockets and utilities.

POP UP UNITS

Also known as Retractable Service Units, our Pop Up Power Units provide a safe and secure outdoor power supply, in a fully retractable and discreet unit.

One of their key advantages over more traditional power sources e.g. power generators, is their retractable nature. When you need power you simply raise them (using a separate handle which is supplied with a unit), and when you are finished with them, you simply lower the unit back into the ground. They are very easy to operate for land managers or council teams.

This feature means they are particularly popular with universities, where it is commonplace for open days and student fairs to be held within campus spaces or next to principle buildings for universities which are located in an urban or city centre location.

Powering such stands can be problematic and quite hazardous where traditional power methods (e.g. petrol generators), can pose various hazards to nearby pedestrians e.g. tripping hazard as well as the risk of electrocution.

Our Pop Up Power units provide either a 16A or 32A power supply in both single and three phase plug sockets, all with RCBO protection

EXETER UNIVERSITY

Developers and Architects working on Exeter University designed a range of our PUPS01 Pop Up Power Units into the communal space outside the new Forum building.

The Forum building is the central hub of the Streatham Campus, which houses various open days and student events throughout the year.

The pop up units provide a 125A power supply in both single and three phase plug sockets, all with RCBO protection. Another great benefit that was crucial in the initial specification, is that the lids of the outdoor pop up power units can accommodate almost any surface infill e.g. concrete, grass, resin and many more materials.

The units at Exeter University were designed with the paving infill that was used in the communal outdoor area, meaning when lowered into the ground the units appear seamless to the campus communal space.

IN GROUND UNITS

Our In-ground units, also known as Flip Lid units, provide a continuous, safe power supply for outdoor areas. One key benefit is they can be operated even while unattended.

Maintenance teams or land managers can access the pop up power sockets within the In-ground unit, and plug in the nearby stalls or kiosks. Then close the lid and lock it, even while in operation.

Only the power cables will protrude out of the power units which can be easily managed with cable guards which ensures there is less of a tripping hazard for nearby pedestrians.

Our In-ground power units are popular with local councils and contractors working on urban projects. They have been installed in many town and city centres across the UK to power market stalls and outdoor events.

There are six models to choose from in the In-Ground Units collection – Slim IGU, PUPS 03, PUPS Floorbox, PUPS02 4040, PUPS02 5050, and the PUPS02 7050.

STAMFORD, LINCOLNSHIRE

Our Flip Lid Power Units were installed in public areas in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, for their market events they hold on a weekly basis.

Manufactured in high grade mild steel and hot dipped galvanised to BS EN:ISO1461. Each unit is tested infilled to FACTA Class B loadings. The cover of each unit was neatly recessed and therefore accommodated the exact paving surrounding the power supply.

Council Planners were pleased with the power units as not only did they benefit from a safe source of outdoor electricity for the local market stalls, but there was minimal impact on the integrity and beauty of the local area.

Our power bollards were installed outside the local civic centre in Gravesham, Kent. It is a popular venue for various outdoor festivals and other events, and there was a requirement for an outdoor power supply to power various stalls and activities.

Specified in a button top Supply Bollard with hatch closure, the slim bollards are located around the perimeter area next to walls, and as a result have a limited impact on the outdoor area.
