STREET FURNITURE
31 Mar 2025
Over the decades our towns and cities have witnessed the evolution of street furniture, the look and design of each phase has responded to modern progression and the technology available at the time. Often the economy of the times is what has shaped our street furniture.
The first example of street furniture in the UK was in fact the ‘Maritime Bollard’. A bollard was originally a wooden or iron post found as a deck fitting on a ship. It was used to secure ropes for towing and mooring.
The ‘Maritime Bollard’ was a design progression from this early ‘bollard’ or rather the wooden posts that came into use in the 17th century along our streets and continued throughout the Victorian Era. As our mode of transport began to progress from horse and carriage to a motorised car the bollards needed to be a little sturdier. The bollards were reconfigured in iron from disused cannons and were mainly to be seen in both Portsmouth and the London Borough of Camden.
Initially street bollards were introduced to protect pavements and buildings from the wear and tear of carriages. Similar to how we use roadside bollards of today. Obviously they have been made stronger and are even designed to withstand the impact of a vehicle attack. The evolution of the bollard has come about as a matter of public safety.
Good design for our cities and streets can often be undermined. Pop Up Power Supplies® offers a fresh perspective, Its range of elegantly designed power bollards, which are often referred to as utility bollards or service bollards, gives architects, town centre managers, facilities managers and local authority specifiers the opportunity to develop their public spaces in a way that maximises visual appeal, instead of having to choosing more functional, utilitarian feeder pillars.
Power bollards can provide between 220 and 400 volts and up to 125A of power, with the standard configuration being 2, 4, 6 or 8 CEE sockets offering 16/32A with protection. In addition to electricity, the bollards can be specified to provide access to sound systems, gas, compressed air systems, RJ jacks, voice/data connections and audio/video connectors. The design can also incorporate an LED light diffuser.
With a stainless steel encasement, the power bollards from Pop Up Power Supplies® come in four contemporary designs, with three standard diameters available. For superb visual appeal, the power bollards are available in crude, brushed or mirror polished finishes and can be colour matched by powder coating in any RAL colour or custom painted, including with logos or airbrushed.
George Parker, Director of Pop Up Power Supplies® says: “Our power bollards are designed to provide a reliable and efficient outdoor power supply in a bollard format that is pleasing on the eye. The stainless steel bollards are elegant in design to match other street furniture but compact enough to avoid adding clutter in busy public areas and pedestrian routes, and even making their own statement as a design feature.”
Pop Up Power Supplies® also offer a range of retractable service units which are increasingly being specified and installed at leisure facilities throughout the UK. These power units offer a reliable and secure power supply for outdoor stalls, and the retractable nature of the units mean that when they are not in use they are simply retracted back into the ground, thus having a minimal impact on the surrounding environment.
Pop Up Power works closely with architects, contractors, business owners, council planners, and other professionals, to ensure the successful specification of power units and project success every time.
