  • POP UP POWER GETS ARTY!

Pop Up Power Supplies are delighted to be asked to install 13 new electricity units at The Hepworth Wakefield. The Hepworth Wakefield Garden which will be one of the UK’s largest free public gardens is being designed by Tom Stuart -Smith and Pop Up Power Supplies are contracted to install the new units within the grounds of the gallery gardens.

The Hepworth Wakefield is an award winning art gallery in the heart of Yorkshire. The building itself was designed by David Chipperfield Architects and opened in May 2011. It is predominately a gallery space but also hosts regular fairs and markets throughout the year to support artists and local makers. It is for this purpose that an external electricity supply is required.

The PUPS3030 Floor-boxes are to be installed around the perimeter of the area and this will allow electricity to be accessed from multiple and varying points. Manufactured entirely from stainless steel the Floor-box is fitted with 16A single phase IP67 sockets. Hepworth have 12 of these units. The PUPS02 In Ground Unit allows for power distribution to be entirely hidden even during operation. The cover for each unit is slightly recessed and infilled with the exact substrate of the surrounding area. Each unit is seamlessly hidden within the ground and the power cables then run directly from the unit to the nearby stall. Each cable has a safety guard protector. Pop Up Power also supply electricity through Bollards in a variety of designs to suit the surroundings. For further information please call us on 0208 2270208.

  • HELPING CIVIL ENGINEERS POWER BUILT-UP AREAS

The quality of the built environment around us has a significant impact on our lives and wellbeing.

Developments to our infrastructure are crucial not only to the economy but also socially – enhancing the quality of life and wellbeing for the people who live here. Innovation is a key driver for such developments and advancing technology plays a big role in making urban places safer and more inspiring. Civil engineers continuously source the construction landscape for products to use which benefit their civil projects. Good design plays a vital role in creating a better place and enriching the local community.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative and practical retractable service units that supply a stable, effective power source for outdoor events and urban spaces. Their clever and innovative design allows the units to be lowered back into the ground when not in use and therefore minimise their impact on local surroundings.

A range of pop up power supply units were recently on show on our stand at Civils Expo 2017, part of UK Construction Week. Visitors to the stand were impressed by the flexibility of the unit and how the power units can be designed and integrated to fit any outdoor space whilst providing a safe and secure power source.

Our surrounding infrastructure is experiencing continued development and expansion, where civil engineers, architects, contractors work together to create more efficient buildings, transport systems, industrial structures and urban spaces, to cope with society’s growing demands.

Town centres are being re-developed by councils in an attempt to drive local shoppers back to the traditional high street to benefit independent retailers and businesses. Here, market days, craft and food festivals, charity fundraisers and more events are held in an attempt to engage communities and encourage more shoppers to visit.

Part of such town centre regeneration projects include specifying an outdoor electricity supply to power such events. Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of retractable service units which provide a safe power supply to town centres across the UK. Locations such as Covent Garden (London), Stamford (Lincolnshire) and Gravesham (Kent) all benefit from our innovative pop up power units which provide a reliable power supply whilst being sensitive to local surroundings.

The PUPS01 pop up power units installed at Covent Garden are situated in the cobbled piazza area, which holds various stalls and events every week. When the power units are needed, they are raised out of the ground and provide a combination of 16A and 32A electric sockets, in single and three phase, with RCBO protection. When the events finish and the piazza clears of stalls, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground where they have no impact on the historic aesthetics of the area.

In-Ground Units (also known as Flip Lid Units) installed at Stamford town centre solved a problem for the Council Planners, as they required an outdoor power source to replace all of the unsightly power cables used to power the market stalls. These often restricted access for shoppers and posed various trip and electrocution hazards. The flip lid units provide an efficient power source for the market stalls and operate with the lids firmly locked down, preventing any public access. The covers of the IGUs are recessed so paving can be installed in the top, making them adaptable to the surrounding environment. They are also tested unfilled to FACTA Class B loadings.

George Parker, director of Pop Up Power Supplies®, comments, “Our range of pop up power units are used extensively within the UK built environment, including town centres, retail parks, heritage sites, sports stadiums, universities, parks and other outdoor spaces. Civil Engineers, architects, contractors and urban designers appreciate the functionality of the power units together with the fact that they are sensitive to their local environment as they can be lowered into the ground when not in use. We have worked with many councils throughout the UK providing innovative power solutions for their town centres and other outdoor spaces.”

We work closely with some of the UK’s leading contractors, architects and civil engineers, creating bespoke outdoor power solutions for their civil projects. Our range of outdoor power supply units enable built environments to become safer, more aesthetically pleasing and more efficient, helping to pave the way for a more sustainable future.

  • MAKING CHRISTMAS MARKETS A RUNAWAY SUCCESS

As the British appetite for Christmas markets continues to grow and they increasingly become a fixture in the annual festivities for towns and cities right across the UK, there has never been a better time to invest in the right power and services infrastructure to allow for hassle-free staging of these footfall-driving events every year.

According to the Local Government Association’s ”Festive Cheer’ report in 2017, Christmas markets can attract jobs, activities and visitors into local economies at a time when the usual visitor economy is less active. They estimate that the number of Christmas markets in the UK grew from 30 in 2007 to more than 100 markets in 2017, with a corresponding increase in the number of days and hours they are open.

With Christmas markets increasing the percentage of ‘out of town’ visitors by up 60 per cent in Birmingham and 72 per cent in Newcastle, local authorities and town centre managers would be wise to invest in the right infrastructure. Primarily, the staging of Christmas markets can be made much simpler with fewer safety risks by having access points for power, gas and other services installed permanently, but hidden away in the ground until they are needed. That’s the principle behind the retractable, Pop Up service units and In-Ground service units available from Pop Up Power Supplies®.

The UK company offers a wide range of solutions that are available on demand, thanks to units that are designed to be sunk into the ground and accessed by authorised operatives only when setting-up and hosting events like Christmas markets. By installing a number of units across the chosen site, such as a town centre square, hooking up wooden huts, market stalls, stages, food vending units, fairground rides and other attractions to services will be quick, easy and safe every year.

The units from Pop Up Power Supplies® provide the scope for local councils and town centre managers to provide a dependable power source with lids which are recessed to accommodate any infill surface material, whether it is stone, paving or grass. When retracted, this ensures that units blend seamlessly with the local environment, upholding the appearance of town urban landscapes.

Safety is assured with pop up and In-Ground Units. Traditional outdoor power supplies, such as power generators, are hazardous in their operation, and trip hazards come through long lengths of trailing power cables. Generators take up space too and allow members of the public to get too close to what is a potential electrocution hazard.

With In-Ground or Pop Up units from Pop Up Power Supplies®, safety is optimised as the power source is discreet to minimise the potential for accidental contact. The cables that connect into the units are generally short and can be placed near the power units, and these are covered with ease by cable protectors.

  • POWERING OUTDOOR LEISURE SPACES

With the vast array of attractive leisure destinations in the UK there is stiff competition. Each destination is always looking for new and innovative ways to improve facilities and the visitor experience is key. The look and feel of the venue is important and of course the surrounding environment is a key factor.

A common requirement in all these venues is an outdoor power source for perhaps a new and exciting ride, outdoor facilities for a caravan park or new family attractions for the little ones.

Pop Up Power Supplies offer a comprehensive range of retractable service units that are increasingly specified and installed at various leisure destinations throughout the UK. These retractable service units offer many advantages. They are a secure and reliable power supply for outdoor stalls and events. The ‘Pop Up’ nature of the unit allows it to simply be retracted back neatly into the ground when not in use. Making them safe, aesthetically pleasing and allowing minimal impact on the surrounding area. The hospitality and leisure industry in the UK is huge. There is always a strong demand for leisure experiences, sporting events and music concerts. The future of our leisure industry is set to be in great shape. This sector is wide and varied. Leisure parks, amusement and theme parks, holiday resorts, caravan and camping, tourist attractions, hotels, glamping and treehouses are among some of the favourites. With new activities capturing our imaginations all the time. Trampolining and outdoor assault courses are for the adventure seeking among us. Outdoor cinema, immersive theatre and virtual reality theme park rides provide entertainment for the creatives. All these new and innovative experiences require their facilities to have a safe, reliable outdoor power source. Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative retractable service power units for outdoor areas. These come in the form of pop up units, in-ground, flip lid units and power bollards. The pop up and in-ground units are particularly popular for businesses within the leisure sector. Their advantages are clear, their retractable nature allows them to be raised or lowered easily and simply for when they are needed; they provide a safe and silent source of electricity; and their lids can cleverly accommodate various paving and landscaping materials such as turf. This allows when lowered or closed, for the unit and lid to blend seamlessly with the urban environment or rural surroundings. The pop up electric units provide power sockets ranging from 16A to 125A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. Housed within a sturdy concrete and cast iron casing, the power units are simply lowered into position (with only light excavation needed to dig the hole). The unit covers are made up of stainless steel AISI304 and offer significant protection for the unit when they are fully retracted. Operating the pop up electric sockets is easy – they are simply raised and lowered using a detachable handle. The in-ground or flip lid units are specially contained units which house electricity sockets and data connections. They provide round-the-clock power for days, weeks and even months on end, and operate with their lids locked down. Minimising any trip hazards for nearby pedestrians, and potential damage from vandalism or harsh weather effects. The flip lid units are easy to operate and are raised and lowered manually with gas strut assistance. Manufactured from high-grade mild steel, the in-ground units conform to various UK Building Standards and regulations. They are hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461 and the covers are tested (unfilled) to FACTA Class B Loading. Pop Up Power Supplies® have supplied their pop up power and in-ground units to many leisure facilities within the UK, including Dreamland in Margate. The amusement park, located on the Kent coast, was re-developed and re-opened in 2015. PUPS01 and PUPS02 retractable service units from Pop Up Power Supplies® were specified to provide outdoor power to their various outdoor stalls, including food and entertainment. Many pop up power units have been installed in various tourist attractions and notable heritage sites across the UK. For example Hampton Court Palace where PUPS02 pop up power units and PUP03 flip lid units were installed in the Kitchen Garden and PUPS Floor Boxes were installed in the Tiltyard Function Room Garden. PUPS01 pop up plug sockets have also been installed at Woburn Abbey, Hastings Stade, The National Memorial Arboretum, and Chiswick House. These are located in various outdoor areas and provide a safe and secure power supply for many stalls, events and weddings. PUPS04 pop up power units have been installed at Kingsbarns Golf Course, on the Fife coast near St Andrews, which provides outdoor power for various events they hold throughout the gold season. Pop Up Power Supplies® are currently working with caravan park owners to specify their pop up power units within park areas to help provide power to caravans and tents. We are also looking to supply glamping sites across the UK due to its increase in popularity in recent years. Our range of retractable telescopic feeder pillars provide a safe, silent power source for holidaymakers, which can be lowered back into the ground when not in use.

  • ADDING VALUE TO BRITAINS PARKS AND SPACES

The value of parks and green spaces in Britain’s cities, towns and villages is being increasingly recognised from a health and wellbeing perspective, but that’s only part of what they can offer at the heart of local communities.

The announcement during 2019 of new initiatives to improve parks and green spaces, including an £11m scheme funded by the government, the National Trust and National Lottery Heritage Fund, will ensure residents of many towns and cities see important enhancements. Building a more sustainable future for these spaces, however, can be achieved by ensuring they are equipped with an effective services infrastructure to provide access to power, water, gas and more as and when it is needed.

This is the rationale behind the range of pop up, retractable and in-ground service units from UK company Pop Up Power Supplies®. Its solutions are already widely installed in parks, recreational grounds, leisure facilities and the outdoor spaces around all kinds of publicly accessible estates and buildings, which allows for the hosting of events, large and small. The success of regular outdoor events that depend on high quality parks and green spaces to attract large numbers of people, including Parkrun and annual fundraisers like Race for Life, demonstrates a strong appetite amongst the public to have access to the great outdoors in their local community. One recent report by the ONS even found that houses and flats within 100 metres of public green spaces are an average of £2,500 more expensive than they would be if they were more than 500 metres away – an average premium of 1.1% (based on 2016 figures).

Key to hosting such events is having safe, reliable access to services on demand to power food and drink kiosks, sound systems, lighting and more, without the need to arrange generators which can be inconvenient and present health and safety risks.

Pop up, retractable power units from Pop Up Power Supplies® are ideal for providing access to services whenever it is needed, but hidden away when not. Four options are available, offering different configurations and supplying up to 600 amps in total, which can be tailored to the specific requirements of the park. These units are raised and lowered into the ground with ease by authorised persons using a simple turning handle, and come with a recessed lid to accommodate grass, paving stones or any other surface type.

The company’s range of in ground units provide an alternative approach. These allow power, water, telephony and gas access points to be concealed in the ground at all times, with access when needed via a flip lid. This can be locked down when in use to prevent unwanted tampering, so only short cables are visible to connect adjacent applications.

  • POP UP POWER SUPPLIES® ARE FIT FOR MULTI-PURPOSE

Flexibility and multi-functionality are vital for sports stadia and venues to maintain a competitive edge in today’s market for sporting and cultural events, key to which is easy and safe accessibility to power and water supplies.

Multi-purpose venues have been created to be able to host a multitude of different events, not simply their primary sport, football. It is a business model that enables stadium owners to capitalise on a public appetite for major events that has never been stronger.

Figures from UK Music, for example, showed that music gigs attract 30m people in the UK per annum, and it is estimated that the country saw a 76% rise in music tourism between 2011 and 2016. Staying competitive and attracting major events – whether that is entertainment, cultural or sporting – means having the right infrastructure in place to adapt to requirements.

The safe provision of electricity to outdoor spaces is, therefore, crucial for both the staging of many different event formats and maintaining spaces and grass pitches with ease.

This dual requirement was one of the key drivers behind the development of the range of Pop Up and In-Ground Power Units by UK manufacturer Pop Up Power Supplies®. Its range of products, which have already benefited stadia including Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge, are designed on the principle that they are ‘there when you need them and hidden when you don’t.

When power or water is required, the Pop Up Units are raised out of the ground with a simple turning handle. After use, they are simply lowered back into the ground. The Pop Up Power Supplies® range of In-Ground Units (or flip lid units) features a simple open-and-close mechanism where maintenance personnel and events staff can access the power points and water supply with ease.

The units provide the scope for stadium managers to host any type of event that can function providing that a dependable power source for lighting, sound systems, signage, television screens, etc. is available. With this ready to use connectivity, any stadium has the potential to host major entertainment acts or alternative sports, as Tottenham Hotspur will do by being the UK’s new NFL American Football venue.

Pop Up Power Supplies® In-Ground Units can be operated with the lids locked down, and the lids for both solutions are also recessed to accommodate any infill surface material, whether it is stone, paving or grass. When retracted, this ensures that units blend seamlessly with the surrounding surfaces, upholding the integrity and aesthetics of the stadium and its outdoor spaces.

Safety is crucial too. No stadium operator can afford to take health and safety risks as the consequences could be catastrophic. Here, retractable service units from Pop Up Power Supplies® offer major advantages too. Traditional outdoor power supplies, such as power generators, are hazardous in their operation, and trip hazards come through long lengths of trailing power cables. Generators take up space too and allow members of the public to get too close to what is a potential electrocution hazard.

With in-ground or pop-up units from Pop Up Power Supplies®, safety is optimised as the power source is discreet to minimise the potential for accidental contact. The cables that connect into the units are generally short as used can be placed near the power units, and these are covered with ease by cable protectors.

  • BOOSTING PRODUCTIVITY AND SAFETY IN OUTDOOR INDUSTRIAL SPACES

Under-utilised outdoor industrial and commercial spaces such as redundant vehicle yards or storage areas can be transformed into productive, income generating additional capacity as and when they are needed by installing Pop Up Power Supplies®’ range of on-demand service units.

By installing retractable service units, which provide access to power and data, it is possible to provide the functionality to use any outdoor space safely and reliably to meet the need for extra capacity in the short term or longer term.

The range of Pop-Up and In-Ground Units from Pop Up Power Supplies® has the advantage of being ‘there when you need them, hidden when you don’t’. This means there is no need to hire temporary, costly and sometimes noisy generators or introduce unwanted health and safety hazards with lengthy trailing cables.

Pop Up Power Units are available in four versions, all of which are easy for staff to raise or lower as required. The adaptability of these retractable telescopic feeder pillars makes them suitable for all outdoor environments including HGV areas.

Another option is an In Ground Power Unit, which can be operated with the lids locked down for continuous unattended use. In Ground or Flip Lid Units provide round-the-clock power for days, weeks or even months on end, minimising the potential for damage owing to vandalism and harsh weather.

In-Ground Units can be used in smaller spaces to supply an outdoor power supply and telephone connection. The double locking lids are raised manually and are gas strut assisted.

If the outdoor environment permits, a third option to provide power and services comes with power bollards available from Pop Up Power Supplies®’. These provide a reliable and efficient outdoor power supply in bollard format, with stainless steel construction, three diameters and four top designs. A stainless steel bollard can provide between 220 and 400 Volts and 125A of power, and they are available with standard configurations plus additional equipment as required.

  • POWER BOLLARDS DELIVER OUTDOOR POWER SUPPLIES WITH ELEGANCE

Good design for the public realm can often be undermined by the practical need to provide access to power and other services, particularly in pedestrianised high streets, plazas, squares and marketplaces, as well as parks and the grounds of large buildings. Recognising this, UK company Pop Up Power Supplies® offers a fresh perspective on balancing visual appeal with safe, secure services access.

Its range of elegantly designed power bollards, which are often referred to as utility bollards or service bollards, gives architects, town centre managers, facilities managers and local authority specifiers the opportunity to develop their public spaces in a way that maximises visual appeal, instead of having to choosing more functional, utilitarian feeder pillars.

Power bollards can provide between 220 and 400 volts and up to 125A of power, with the standard configuration being 2, 4, 6 or 8 CEE sockets offering 16/32A with protection. In addition to electricity, the bollards can be specified to provide access to sound systems, water supplies, gas, compressed air systems, RJ jacks, voice/data connections and audio/video connectors. The design can also incorporate an LED light diffuser.

With a stainless steel encasement, the power bollards from Pop Up Power Supplies® come in four contemporary designs, with three standard diameters available. For superb visual appeal, the power bollards are available in crude, brushed or mirror polished finishes and can be colour matched by powder coating in any RAL colour or custom painted, including with logos or airbrushed.

George Parker, Director of Pop Up Power Supplies® says: “Our power bollards are designed to provide a reliable and efficient outdoor power supply in a bollard format that is pleasing on the eye. The stainless steel bollards are elegant in design to match other street furniture but compact enough to avoid adding clutter in busy public areas and pedestrian routes, and even making their own statement as a design feature.”

  • RETRACTABLE AND IN-GROUND POWER UNITS OFFER CLEAR PATH TO MARINA SAFETY

The comprehensive range of retractable service units and in ground power units from Pop Up Power Supplies® is already helping marina and mooring owners and operators across the UK and Ireland to reduce clutter on jetties and docksides, as well as the potential for accidents.

By switching to a service unit that can be raised or lowered as and when required, the power source is only there when you need it and hidden when you don’t, meaning that fewer obstacles will impede important pedestrian routes to access boats and marina services.

Pop Up Power Supplies® offers a range of four pop up, retractable units which are also known as telescopic feeder pillars. These can be raised out of the ground with ease using a turning handled and be configured to provide access to up to a 125 amps single or 3 phase incoming supply for electricity, as well as water, gas and telephone. Robust and engineered to last, the units are encased in a stainless steel and concrete structure, and the lid is available in stainless steel or cast iron with a recess if needed to accommodate the required ground surface.

In ground power units offer a solution that can be operated whilst still in the ground for continuous unattended use, which can be ideal in locations where space is at a premium. The flip lids are raised manually and are gas strut assisted, enabling cables to be connected to power sockets without the service unit becoming an obstruction on a pedestrian route. They are ideal for use in more public areas as their design minimises the potential for damage owing to vandalism, because they operate with the lid locked down with only the power cable protruding.

Pop Up Power Supplies® offers a range of six in ground units, from the Slim 250mm unit, right up to the 700mm x 500mm PUPS02 – 7050-for providing total power of up to 125 amps. All feature recessed covers to accept paving or other types of surface to achieve a seamless visual result.

  • POWERING A SAFE, SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR BRITAIN’S HERITAGE BUILDINGS

With the public appeal of many of the UK’s historic buildings principally driven by their external appearance, the ability to maintain surrounding spaces safely and easily and unlock their potential for outdoor events is increasingly paving the way for an economically sustainable future.

The key to capitalising on this bright future is the safe provision of electricity to these outdoor spaces in a way that is not detrimental to the aesthetic appeal of a heritage building. Access to power is essential for staging the kind of outdoor activities that draw in visitors, such as craft fairs, markets and sporting events, and add to the bottom line. In addition, power is also required for maintenance tools and machinery, as and when this is required outside of the public view.

Achieving the balance between practicality and aesthetics is easily achievable through the range of fully retractable and In-Ground power units available from Pop Up Power Supplies®. These are designed on the principle that they are ‘there when you need them and hidden when you don’t.

POP UP UNITS AND IN-GROUND POWER UNITS

When power is required, the Pop Up Units are raised out of the ground with a simple turning handle. After use, they are simply lowered back into the ground.

The Pop Up Power Supplies® range of In-Ground units (or flip lid units) features a simple open-and-close mechanism where maintenance personnel and events staff can access the power points with ease.

The units provide the scope for heritage sites to host any type of event that can function providing a dependable power source for lighting, sound systems, signage, refrigerators, etc. is available.

This affords venues the creative freedom to consider a comprehensive events programme throughout the year that could result in a valuable income stream, capitalising on the summer tourist season and key periods including Christmas, Easter and Halloween.

The In-Ground power units can be operated with the lids locked down, and the lids for both solutions are also recessed to accommodate any infill surface material, whether it is stone, paving or grass. When retracted, this ensures that units blend seamlessly with the local environment, upholding the integrity and aesthetics of heritage sites.

No owner or operator of a public building or space can afford to take health and safety risks as the consequences could be catastrophic.

The cables that connect into the units are generally short and can be placed near the power units, and these are covered with ease by cable protectors.

After the visitors have left, the power units are also useful for maintenance personnel to operate machinery for keeping the site in first rate condition and maintaining the attraction of heritage assets.

  • WHY IS ELECTRICITY IMPORTANT IN INFRASTRUCTURE?

Electrical power has become a core component in modern life. Electricity powers businesses, which creates employment, which drives economic growth for infrastructure.

Any disruptions in electrical supply will result in major implications in social and economic factors.

The UK’s infrastructure is experiencing continued expansion and development, with more sustainable and energy efficient buildings, better transport systems, smarter telecommunications and data transfer networks, and more effective industry operations.

Town centres are being re-developed by councils in an attempt to drive shoppers back to the high street to favour local, independent retailers and cafes. Market days, craft and food festivals, charity fundraisers and more events are held in an attempt to engage communities and encourage shoppers to visit.

Such town centre re-generation projects will involve specifying an electrical supply to power such outdoor events.

We work closely with Town Planners, Civil Engineers, Architects and Contractors in designing safe, secure power supplies for outdoor areas. Our Retractable Service Units are replacing more traditional power supplies such as petrol generators. These often pose more dangers to nearby pedestrians in the form of tripping hazards or even electrocution due to the exposed power units.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of Pop Up Power Units, In Ground Units and Power Bollards which provide a safe source of electricity. Our Pop Up Units can be raised and lowered conveniently by market traders, so whenever the market event ends they can be lowered back into the ground when not needed.

Our range of In Ground Units provide a reliable, safe power source with the lids locked down. Simply, when a power supply is needed the lids are opened using a key (supplied) which reveals several power points. Just plug in and then close and lock the lids and trail the wire out to a nearby stall or kiosk safely.

Power Bollards provide an outdoor electricity supply in elegant street furniture format. These are a common site across the UK and provide a robust, stylish design to house an electrical supply for outdoor stalls.

INNOVATIVE POWER SUPPLIES FOR OUTDOOR PLACES

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of retractable service units which provide a safe power supply to town centres across the UK.

Locations such as Covent Garden (London), Stamford (Lincolnshire) and Gravesham (Kent) all benefit from our innovative pop up power units which provide a reliable power supply while being sensitive to local surroundings.

The PUPS01 pop up power units installed at Covent Garden are situated in the cobbled piazza area, which holds various stalls and events every week. When the power units are needed, they are raised out of the ground and provide a combination of 16A and 32A electric sockets, in single and three phase, with RCBO protection.

When the events finish and the piazza clears of stalls, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground where they have no impact on the historic aesthetics of the piazza area.

We work closely with some of the UK’s leading contractors, architects and civil engineers, creating bespoke outdoor power solutions. Our range of outdoor power supply units enable a safer, more efficient infrastructure.

  • DESIGNING A MODERN TOWN CENTRE AND HOW TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE OUTDOOR POWER

Town centres are undergoing a period of significant change. Footfall has dwindled over the years due to online shopping and there is a lower demand for retail space than before. However, the Government, together with local councils, are undertaking projects to regenerate such town centre spaces trying to re-establish them as attractive places to visit.

Part of such regeneration plans include organising outdoor events to create physical experiences for visitors e.g. market days and festivals. Powering such events can often be problematic, with traditional power supplies such as petrol generators, posing health and safety risks.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of Outdoor Power Units which are ideal for town centre spaces, market days, festivals and other built up areas.

We have three types of power unit, including Pop Up Units which can be raised and lowered from the ground as and when they are needed. In-Ground Units which can provide a source of electricity with the lids locked down ensuring clear, safe walkways. And finally, Power Bollards which provide a source of power in elegant street furniture format.

THE CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF TOWN CENTRES

The considerable shift in consumer trends and habits has meant more and more shoppers now favour buying goods online. Not only that, but out-of-town shopping centres are also increasingly popular as they offer retail experiences as well as leisure facilities e.g. restaurants, bowling, arcades, in one convenient location.

These factors have compounded to create difficult economic conditions for town centres. Footfall has dropped dramatically in town centres over the years and local councils are now trying to address this issue. They are trying to re-establish town centre areas as attractive places where people visit and developers invest.

Councils throughout the UK have developed ambitious plans to create positive change in town centres to encourage visitors, investors and businesses, with the overall aim to boost the macro economies. Planning Policy Statement 6: Planning for Town Centres (PPS6) sets out the Government’s policy in England on planning for the future of town centres and the main uses that relate to them.

Council Planners have to work with existing outdoor spaces, often rich in Heritage. They have to create positive sustainable and economic changes to increase awareness in the town centre spaces. A popular way to do this is by organising outdoor events.

Traditional market days and festivals are commonplace in town centres throughout the UK. Indeed, Christmas Markets have surged in popularity over recent years. Stalls and kiosks selling artisan products, local food produce, clothes, crafts, toys and much more, are helping to draw crowds back to town centre areas.

Such festivals and market days have to ensure safety is paramount, safeguarding the visitors. Traditional means of powering stalls and staged events include power generators being located around the grounds, with trailing leads.

This poses various safety hazards including trip hazards for visitors and traders as well as electrocution hazards with the exposed generators and electricity sources.

A solution to these issues is our range of Retractable Service Units, which provide a safe, sustainable source of electricity to outside spaces.

PROVIDING SAFE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR TOWN CENTRE REDEVELOPMENTS

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative Outdoor Power Units which help Local Councils in their redevelopment projects. The retractable nature of the power units and the increased safety they bring to town centre areas is greatly appreciated by Council Planners and Market/Festival Organisers.

    POP UP POWER UNITS

Our Pop Up Power Units can be raised and lowered easily with a detachable handle, and provide a range of electricity sockets and data points. The units are easily design and installed into town centre areas and only require light excavation.

On event days, Festival Organisers and Market Day Traders simply raise the power units where they then have access to a range of power sockets. These range from 16A to 12 5A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. When the festival or market event finishes, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground until the next event, where they blend seamlessly with the local environment.

    IN GROUND UNITS

One of the main advantages of our In Ground Power Units, or Flip Lid Units, is that they can be operated with the lids locked down. The units sit in the ground flush with the surface level, and when needed, the user simply opens the lid to reveal power sockets or water supply.

The power units provide a stable power supply to outdoor festivals and markets stalls preventing any public access and reducing trip hazards. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461. The lids are also recessed and can be infilled with the surface material to create a seamless environment.

  • INTEGRATING POP UP POWER UNITS INTO EXISTING OUTDOOR SPACES

In recent years there has been a clear shift towards refurbishment projects as opposed to new build developments. Advances in modern day lifestyles, work patterns and leisure activities have led to many buildings and built up areas becoming outdated and redundant. As a result, there is an increasing requirement to power such regenerated outdoor spaces.

Refurbishment projects include various town centre regeneration schemes; commercial and retail developments converted into more modern, customer-friendly environment; sports stadiums converted into multi-purpose sports, events and leisure areas; and leisure facilities being upgraded, particularly within the UK, where increasing numbers of holidays opt for ‘staycations’ rather than holidays abroad.

Pop Up Power Supplies® offer a range of Retractable Service Units which are ideal for outdoor and communal refurbishments projects covering a wide number of sectors. We work closely with Architects, Developers, Contractors, Specifiers and other industry professionals, helping with the specification process into such refurbishment projects.

    THE RISE OF REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS

As previously mentioned, advances in modern lifestyles has resulted in large numbers of outdated and redundant buildings and built up areas. Developers, Councils, and Clients are opting to redevelop these existing buildings and built up areas as opposed to building new developments.

Reasons for refurbishment include a finite amount of available land and space, which in the UK is a significant issue having a relatively small land mass. The quality of buildings and outdoor areas in existence are often still structurally sound and well constructed, meaning a shorter development period for a project. This reduces build costs and increases the number of projects that can be realised.

When outdoor areas or infrastructure developments are being refurbished, it is essential that the amenities available match the requirements of the surrounding buildings and facilities. For example, sources of electricity and gas services, and cables/telecommunication.

This is where our range of Outdoor Pop Up Power Units benefit refurbished infrastructure developments. Due to their retractable nature, the Pop Up Units can be raised and lowered on demand. When there is a requirement e.g. market days in town centres, the Pop Up Units are simply raised by stall holders and event organisers with a simple turning key. When they are no longer needed, they are lowered back into the ground. And as the lids are infilled with the surrounding surface material e.g. paving, they appear seamless and blend in.

POP UP POWER UNITS FOR REFURBISHMENT PROJECTS

Our range of Retractable Service Units have been specified on many refurbishment and redevelopment projects. As part of a regeneration project, Council Planners and Developers specified our In Ground Units in public areas in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, for their market events they hold on a weekly basis.

Council Planners required a power source to replace all of the unsightly trailing cables that were used previously to power the stalls. On market days these often restricted access for shoppers on the pavement areas and also posed safety hazards. The Flip Lid Power Units were easily installed with only light excavation required and were an ideal solution as they provide an outdoor power source for the market stalls with the lids locked down, therefore removing any trip hazards and preventing public access.

A number of Pop Up Power Units were installed at Chiswick House, a Grade 1 Listed Heritage Site. As part of a restoration program, the Chiswick House and Gardens Trust contacted Pop Up Power Supplies® required an outdoor power supply for various stalls and events they held in the garden areas throughout the year. The Pop Up Power Units provide a safe source of electricity and only required a small digger to install, therefore minimal disruption to the gardens. And provide either a 16A or 32A power supply in both single and three phase sockets, all with RCBO protection.

A series of PUPS04 Pop Up Units were specified and installed into a redevelopment program at The Cutty Sark Historic Monument. A popular tourist attraction, The Cutty Sark attracts thousands of visitors where they visit the famous ship as well as surrounding market stalls. The stalls and kiosks required an outdoor power source, which the PUPS04 units provide. The power units provide a 16A or 32A power supply in both single and three phase plug sockets, all with RCBO protection. And importantly can be lowered back into the ground when not in use.

    POWER UNITS FOR OUTSIDE SPACES

Our range of power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the suitable specification, they are delivered to site where all the contractor has to do then is to dig the required hole and install the unit.

The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug sockets means the units are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, local councils, estates departments in universities, urban designers and many more engineering professionals.

  • A SPECIFIERS’ GUIDE TO DESIGNING OUTDOOR POWER SUPPLIES

Specifying outdoor power solutions for build projects can be a challenging process. Project collaboration for the construction and civil sectors is becoming increasingly complex, with the rise of BIM, the importance of embracing digital, emerging topics such as sustainability, and the ever-challenging economic environment.

Specialising in planning, designing and installing outdoor power solutions, a big part in the service offered by Pop Up Power Supplies® is working closely with clients in their specification project tender process.

SPECIFYING POWER UNITS FOR OUTDOOR SPACES

An effective specification plays a key role in project fulfilment. First and foremost, what are the client requirements for needing an outdoor power supply?

Common requirements include town centre market days providing a source of electricity for market stalls; university campuses to provide power for outdoor kiosks in open day events; hotel and leisure facilities for outdoor events such as wedding marques; sports stadiums to provide power for irrigation systems and portable lighting; parks and green spaces to provide electricity points for outdoor stalls and events; retail and commercial environments providing an outdoor power supply for food stalls within external areas of shopping centres; and many more.

Once the requirements have been established, the next task is to determine the impact of the local environment. Is there a large expansive space or will the power unit be installed in a confined area? Is the surrounding area of a sensitive nature e.g. a Heritage Site or a town centre with a historic aesthetic?

Pop Up Power Supplies® has three main power units in our range – Pop Up Units, In-Ground Units (or Flip Lid Units) and Power Bollards. Each unit has its own key advantages and reason for Specification and can accommodate a range of electricity sockets and utilities.

For example, our Power Bollards provide outdoor power in elegant street furniture format. Clients prefer this option when their outdoor areas need some form of decoration or styling element. Flip Lid Units are often preferred in outdoor areas where space is at a premium or public safety is paramount, like a town centre square for market stalls. Pop Up Power Units are specified into outdoor areas such as in sports stadiums, particularly next to a pitch area. Our Pop Up Units have been installed in various stadiums including Chelsea FC, Wembley Arena Square and Mary Peters Athletics Track, Belfast.

  • POWERING OUTDOOR AREAS THROUGHOUT 2018 - A BUSY YEAR!

Pop Up Power Supplies® is proving to be a real success story in the design and supply of an outdoor power supply. Architects, Contractors, Electrical Engineers, Council Planners, Stadium Designers and other construction professionals appreciate the simplicity and effectiveness of the range of Pop Up Power Units.

Available in three formats – Pop Up Power Units, In Ground Units and Power Bollards, the ranges of power units provide electricity points in a discreet manner, and importantly are sensitive to local surroundings.

    POP UP UNITS

The Pop Up Units, often referred to as Electrical Feeder Pillars, are installed in the ground so the tops of the units sit flush with ground level. When the power units are needed, operators simply raise the power units with a detachable handle, and then plug nearby stalls and electrical equipment into the available power sockets.

When the units are no longer needed they are lowered back into the ground, therefore posing no on-going risk to the public, as well as keeping the units safe from weather elements and vandalism.

They provide power sockets ranging from 16A to 125A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. Housed within sturdy concrete and cast iron casings, the power units are simply lowered into position (with only light excavation needed to dig the hole).

    IN GROUND POWER UNITS

The range of innovative In Ground Units can be operated with the lid locked down. This means they can provide a stable power supply to outdoor markets and stalls preventing any public access and reducing trip hazards. Thus increasing safety in public places.

The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.

Our Flip Lid Power Units have been specified on many construction projects throughout 2019. Notable projects include the Al Mouj Muscat beachfront resort in Oman, where a total of 56 of the power units were installed within the luxury mixed-use complex. They provided an effective power source for outdoor events, stalls and kiosks around the hotel perimeter.

Another highlight was supplying a number of In Ground Units to an events area outside a new Travelodge Hotel, located on the Southwater Square leisure complex, Telford. The events area is adjacent to the Travelodge Hotel, and surrounded by various coffee shops, restaurants and shops for visitors. As a result, developers of the new build construction required an outdoor power source that would power various events e.g. promotional stalls and kiosks, that was safe for nearby pedestrians, which is why they turned to the In Ground Units.

    POWER BOLLARDS

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of power supply bollards in elegant street furniture designs, providing a safe power supply for outdoor areas.

We supply in various configurations and finishes – with three different diameters available; four configurations for the tops, including Parc Paris Top, Domed Top, Button Top and Sloping Top; and also available in a powder painted RAL colour, mirrored finish or custom paint finishes.

Available in three diameters of 250mm, 325mm and 500mm, our Power Supply Bollards have four top configurations – Parc Paris Top, Domed Top, Button Top and Sloping Top. This is to ensure their aesthetics blend in with a wide range of environments, from market squares, to car parks, to historic streets.

George Parker, Director of Pop Up Power Supplies, comments, “Our Power Bollards are a popular option for outdoor spaces across the UK. We work closely with Architects and Electrical Engineers to create bespoke configurations that completely suit the client’s specification.

When we were approached by Planners at Gravesham Borough Council, they wanted an outdoor power supply for an area outside the local civic centre, for various outdoor festivals and other events. We ran through their requirements and were able to configure a range of Button Top Supply Bollards with hatch closure.

Our team was also able to advise on the best location for the power units which was around the perimeter area next to the walls. This meant they had a limited impact on the aesthetics of the local area, but still carefully positioned so stalls and other kiosks could connect easily.”

    UTILITY POWER BOLLARDS

Each of our Power Supply Bollards can provide between 220 and 400 volts and 125A of power, with customised socket arrangements in the internal structure. • OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR INDUSTRIAL UNITS AND MANUFACTURING FACILITIES

Providing an external power supply for industrial units and manufacturing facilities is a complex task. Factories often have unique requirements for powering specialist electrical equipment as well as factors such as outside lighting.

Traditional power methods are often adopted in outside spaces within industrial units, such as power generators or trailing power cables from internal sockets, however these often pose safety hazards for workers.

Pop Up Power Supplies® manufacture and supply a range of retractable outdoor power units to provide a safe, secure outdoor power supply. These are a far more practical external power supply compared to traditional methods, and it means industrial units can operate with a higher degree of functionality and safety in their outside spaces.

    INDUSTRIAL AND MANUFACTURING OVERVIEW

It is a challenging time at the moment for manufacturing and industrial companies, especially in the UK. There is an air of uncertainty around Brexit and how it will affect UK goods and their distribution, as well as a skills shortage within the construction sector.

However, there is still optimism for the sectors where the Centre for Economics and Business Research reported that Britain, the sixth biggest economy in the world, will see its GDP grow from £1.59 trillion to £2.64 trillion by 2028, surpassing France and Germany.

The importance of the manufacturing and industrial sectors within the UK is extremely high. Zenoot, an online source of news, information and data for the manufacturing sector, stated the British public believes manufacturing vital for future of post-Brexit economy. Not only will it secure out place in the global economy but also will provide important jobs and employment for future generations.

POWERING OUTSIDE SPACES WITHIN INDUSTRIAL UNITS AND MANUFACTURING FACILITIES

As stated in the opening paragraph, due to the diverse nature of industrial and manufacturing companies and their products, providing a power supply for their outdoor spaces is challenging.

Often, facilities require outside lighting supply to light up car parks or turning circles for forklifts to operate. Many facilities run 24 hours a day therefore workers need to be able to operate forklifts and other machinery safely outside in the dark.

This requires an external power source that is safe and cannot interfere with manufacturing operations. Our range of Pop Up Power Units and In-Ground Units provide an effective outside power source and are fully retractable.

The Pop Up Units provide a range of electric sockets – 16, 32, 63 and 125 amps, all with RCBO protection. The sockets are housed in sturdy cast iron and concrete units and have stainless steel lids. Operating the power units is simple, they are raised and lowered by a simple handle (supplied with the units) where operators can raise or lower the units as and when they are needed.

Our range of In Ground Power Units also provide an outside power supply for industrial units and manufacturing facilities. One of their main advantages is the units provide an outdoor power source with the lids locked down, which increases safety (i.e. reducing any trip hazards) and reduces any chance of vandalism or wear and tear from harsh weather conditions.

The power units are manufactured from high grade mild steel – Hot Dip Galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461. The covers for the In Ground Units are tested unfilled to FACTA class B loading, making them ideal for car parks, turning circles and outside industrial areas where forklift trucks, lorries and other machinery operate.

Our range of Flip Lid Units are ideal for charging electrical items e.g. forklift trucks or palette handling machines. The electrical machinery can be safely parked next to the retractable power unit where a safe and secure charging process can take place.

Another consideration for specifying retractable power units in industrial facilities is more of a future-proofing scheme. The adoption of electric vehicles is still in its infancy, but many consider electricity to be the most suitable power source for vehicles in the future due to its less harmful effects on the environment.

There will be a stage where lorries and haulage trucks adopt electricity as their power source. When they do, they will require an effective, convenient outdoor power supply to connect to. Our range of In Ground Power Units and Pop Up Units are ideal for these scenarios. Indeed, our range of Power Bollards would be suitable for powering trucks. Crafted from stainless steel in elegant designs, the Power Bollards provide 220 and 400 volts and 125A of power.

The Power Bollards are available in a range of finishes, including brushed, crude, mirror polish, powder painted RAL colours and a custom paint and airbrushed logos for bespoke options.

A final consideration for providing an outdoor power supply is a backup power supply. A common solution to the main power supply going down is for manufacturing facilities and industrial units to have backup generators. But an alternative to backup generators for powering outside spaces is our range of retractable service units, providing a stand-alone effective power source.

  • INNOVATIVE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR PARKS

According to research carried out by Fields in Trust, parks and green spaces across the UK provide people with over £34 billion of health and wellbeing benefits. The Government, Local Councils, Charities and businesses across many sectors are increasingly investing into park areas and public green spaces.

Popular investments include a wide range of events, including park runs and other sporting meet-ups, local fairs, agricultural shows, festivals and cultural occasions and music concerts.

Powering such events can sometimes be problematic with traditional power sources, for example stand-alone petrol generators. These devices pose various hazards to nearby pedestrians in the form of electrocution and tripping potential (with trailing wires).

Pop Up Power Supplies® manufacture and supply a range of pop up electric sockets which are ideal for powering kiosks and stalls in parks and green spaces. Our Pop Up Power Units and In Ground Power Units provide a sensitive source of electricity for outdoor events, have minimal impact on the nearby surrounds and importantly are incredibly safe for nearby pedestrians.

The main benefit of our Retractable Telescopic Feeder Pillars is their discreet nature. The Pop Up Power Units can be easily raised and lowered by event organisers to provide electrical outlets. When an event finishes the power unit is simply lowered back into the ground where it appears seamless with the local environment, thanks to the lid infill which can accommodate any surface material e.g. grass or paving.

Our In Ground Units can provide a source of power for stalls with their lids locked down. Just the wire protrudes the power unit but is easily managed with cable protectors.

POP UP ELECTRIC SOCKETS FOR PARKS AND GREEN SPACES

Research conducted by Eventbrite (global platform for live experiences) shows that the UK has established itself as a world leader in outdoor events following the 2012 Olympics. Since 2012 the number of outdoor events attended has increased significantly.

As the nation starts to attend more events, companies and charities increase their spending on such events, tapping into increasingly profitably markets. Eventbrite concludes that the events sector is worth £42.3 billion to the UK economy in terms of direct spending by attendees and organisers.

Providing a safe, secure power supply is vitally important for the longevity and success of such outdoor events in parks and green spaces. Organisers need to be re-assured that their outdoor power supply is fit for the purpose intended (powering outdoor stalls) while providing high levels of safety for nearby pedestrians.

Our Pop Up Power units have been specified and installed in parks throughout the UK. A selection of Pop Up Power Sockets were installed in Victoria Park. One of London’s most important historic parks, Victoria Park enjoys millions of visitors and is a place of healthy recreation, sport and relaxation.

Community fairs, festivals, sport and leisure activities and other historic events are a regular occurrence throughout the year at Victoria Park. Our Retractable Telescopic Feeder Pillars provide an effective outdoor power supply for temporary stalls and kiosks during such events.

The Pop Up Units provide a 125A power supply in both single and three phase plug sockets, all with RCBO protection. Another great benefit that was crucial in the initial product selection, is that the lids of the power units can accommodate almost any surface infill. When the units are lowered into the ground they appear seamless to the local environment. This is vital for the heritage status of Victoria Park as it retained its Green Flag and Green Heritage Awards back in 2015.

    POWER SUPPLY FOR PARKS

Pop Up Power Supplies® provide a range of retractable service units for parks and green spaces projects throughout the UK. Architects, Contractors, Electrical Engineers and other industry professionals appreciate our power units compared to traditional generators, due to the retractable nature of the units and the increased safety they bring to public areas.

Our range of retractable and flip lid power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the suitable specification, they are delivered to site where all the contractor has to do then is to dig the required hole and install the unit.

  • INCREASING DEMAND FOR BRITISH-MADE POWER UNITS

The UK built environment is continually changing, facing a wide array of external influences covering technological, economic, political and social factors. Despite a slight slow-down in UK manufacturing output mid-way through 2018, construction build projects are still thriving and playing a big role in developing infrastructure.

Further good news shows that manufactured exports are increasing too, driven by an increasing demand for British-made products and also a weaker Sterling rate. Pop Up Power Supplies® have noticed this strength in demand for our range of British-made In Ground Units. Manufactured on UK shores, our units are increasingly being specified on build projects not only within the UK but worldwide.

Construction professionals such as developers, architects, contractors, civil engineers, electrical contractors and more, appreciate the benefits that our In Ground Power Units bring to their projects. Their major benefits include providing a safe, secure outdoor power supply for various environments such as town centres, market days, shopping centres, universities, sports stadiums and more. The power units can be operated with the lid locked down, therefore preventing any public access, reducing any potential hazards.

    POWERING UK MANUFACTURING

UK manufacturing is going through somewhat mixed fortunes currently. After a strong start to 2018 where output expanded at its fastest rate since 2008, it has since fallen mid-way through the year. With the press reporting the potential of a ‘No-Deal Brexit’ and other pressing factors such as a significant skills shortage within construction, there is a bit of uncertainty in the air.

However, the Centre for Economics and Business Research reported that Britain, the sixth biggest economy in the world, will see its GDP grow from £1.59 trillion to £2.64 trillion by 2028, surpassing France and Germany.

Construction projects are commonplace across the UK – new universities, multi-occupancy residential blocks, commercial and retail units, sports stadiums, infrastructure developments and civil projects, and many more. Pop Up Power Supplies® have seen strong growth in demand for our Pop Up Power units, not only on UK shores but across the World.

Our In Ground Units were recently specified on a Travelodge hotel, located on the Southwater Square complex, Telford. The leisure complex features a range of retail and dining facilities, as well as a new public green space and events area. Also, 56 In Ground Power Units were specified at the Al Mouj Muscat beachfront resort in Oman, who required an outdoor power source for its collection of luxurious facilities and amenities.

IN GROUND UNITS – MADE IN BRITAIN

Our range of Flip Lid Units are made in England by skilled engineers. The electrical components are designed (often bespoke options for clients’ unique requirements) and integrated into the galvanised steel boxes. The boxes are hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461 which makes them robust, incredibly hard wearing and long lasting.

In Ground Power Units come in two options – Slim and Deep. Slim models are 250mm deep and offer a single-phase incoming power supply. Deep models have a depth of 750mm and feature a single and three-phase power supply.

A major advantage of our In Ground Units compared to traditional power methods e.g. petrol generators, is their safe operation and discreet nature. They can provide an outdoor power supply with the lids locked down, preventing any public access. Regarding their discreet nature, the covers of the power units are recessed and can accommodate virtually any surface material e.g. paving, grass, concrete and more. This ensures that when the lids are locked down they appear seamless to the surrounding environments.

Our Flip Lid Units have been specified and installed in public areas across the UK. Council Planners in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, specified the power units for areas of the town centre to power market stalls and kiosks. Read the full project details here.

  • INNOVATIVE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR UNIVERSITIES

Student enrolment is a crucial element for any university facility. Open days and student fairs are important events that showcase campus amenities and demonstrate their strengths, and as a result universities invest significant sums of money to get such events right.

A wide variety of kiosks and stalls are located around campuses, or next to principle buildings for universities which are located in an urban or city centre location. Powering such stands can be problematic and quite hazardous where traditional power methods, for example petrol generators, can pose various hazards to nearby pedestrians.

Pop Up Power Supplies® manufacture and supply a range of innovative retractable power units which are ideal for powering kiosks and booths in university campuses. Two popular options include our Pop Up Power Units and In Ground Power Units. Both units provide a sensitive source of electricity for outdoor events, have minimal impact on the nearby surrounds and importantly are incredibly safe for nearby pedestrians.

POWERING OUTDOOR AREAS WITHIN UNIVERSITY ESTABLISHMENTS

UK universities generate more than £95 billion for the country’s economy, providing 940,000 jobs and there are 2.32 million students studying at higher educational institutions. It is a huge sector for the UK economy and enrolling future students for the professionals, scholars, artists and financiers of tomorrow, is big business.

University institutions place a significant effort on student enrolment and planning open days and student events to convince prospective students that their facilities are the one to study at. Traditional methods of powering stalls and booths in such events often involved having trailing wires from nearby buildings or petrol generators nearby. Both methods pose significant safety issues including trip and electrocution hazards.

Pop Up Power Supplies® manufacture and supply a range of pop up power units that are perfect for powering open days within university campuses. Our in ground power units can provide an outdoor power supply with the lid locked down. This means walkways and pedestrian access is clear from obtruding structures. Our pop up power units provide an outdoor power source for kiosks, and their retractable nature means when they are no longer needed they are simply lowered back into the ground.

POWERING OUTDOOR SPACES IN UNIVERSITIES ACROSS THE UK

Our power units have been specified in many universities across the country. Developers and Architects working on Exeter University designed a range of our PUPS01 pop up power units into the communal space outside the new Forum building. This area is the central hub of the Streatham Campus, which houses various open days and student events throughout the year.

The pop up units provide a 125A power supply in both single and three phase plug sockets, all with RCBO protection. Another great benefit that was crucial in the initial specification, is that the lids of the power units can accommodate almost any surface infill, whether concrete, paving, grass or resin surfacing. The units at Exeter University were designed with the paving infill that was used in the communal outdoor area, meaning when lowered into the ground the units appear seamless to the environment.

Our retractable service units can also be found at Aberdeen University. Again, the PUPS01 was the unit of choice and were installed in the outside lawn areas by The Kings College Chapel and also Elphinstone Hall, to provide outdoor power to marquees used for weddings and corporate events.

George Parker, Director of Pop Up Power Supplies® commented, “Aberdeen University is famous for its beautiful architecture and because of this they didn’t want power units around the campus being a permanent feature. Our pop up units were recommended as they provide the necessary outdoor power supply for their wedding and corporate events, and when they aren’t in use they are simply retracted into the ground by turning a handle.”

  • IGUS PROVIDE OUTDOOR POWER FOR EVENTS AREA AROUND TRAVELODGE

Early 2018 saw construction start of a new Travelodge Hotel, located on the Southwater Square complex, Telford. The leisure complex features a range of retail and dining facilities, as well as a new public green space and events area.

The events area is adjacent to the Travelodge Hotel, surrounded by various coffee shops, restaurants and shops for visitors. As a result, developers of the new build construction required an outdoor power source that would power various events e.g. promotional stalls and kiosks, that was safe for nearby pedestrians.

Pop Up Power Supplies® and Fabweld Steel Products (FSP) joined together in a collective effort to provide a range of their in ground power units for the leisure complex. Two major reasons for their specification into the project were, one, they provide a safe and secure outdoor power source with the lids locked down. And two, their lids can be infilled with a wide range of surface materials, therefore the paving that was used in the events area could be integrated into the lids. So when the lids are down they blend seamlessly into the surroundings.

IN GROUND UNITS PROVIDE A SAFE OUTDOOR POWER SUPPLY FOR TELFORD LEISURE COMPLEX

The new Travelodge hotel at Southwater Square is one of twenty new Travelodge hotels to be built in 2018. The hotel features 68 rooms and sits centrally within the Southwater Square complex, surrounded by well-known restaurants, shops, coffee shops, a cinema, and a bowling and bingo centre.

Part of the hotel development was an events area which would host various events throughout the year. It was predicted that the area would attract thousands of visitors annually, therefore developers had to consider safe options to power such stalls and kiosks.

Traditional power supplies e.g. generators, were impractical, as they posed risks to nearby pedestrians in the form of electrocution and a trip hazard. Fabweld Steel Products and Pop Up Power Supplies® worked together to create bespoke in ground power units for the events area at Southwater Square.

Stalls and kiosks will benefit from having outdoor power sockets in a single and three phase supply, all with RCBO protection. They are easily operated by kiosk staff, where all they need is a double ended key to use. They simply insert the key into the IGU, turn to unlock, then open the lid. Here they can connect their stalls to the power sockets, close and lock down the lid.

The lids of the in ground power units are tested unfilled to FACTA Class B loadings, therefore more than adequate to cope with high levels of pedestrian traffic. The structure of the power units is also high quality, constructed of high-grade mild steel, hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.

George Parker, Director at Pop Up Power Supplies®, commented, “It was a pleasure to work with Fabweld Steel Products on this project, and our in ground units were a perfect fit for the events area at Southwater Square. We are seeing more and more of our power units installed in public places such as events areas, town centres, shopping centres, civic areas and outdoor areas. Developers, architects, contractors find our power units easy to work with and specify for their project requirements.”

James Hilton, Project Manager at Fabweld Steel Products, commented, “We have worked with Pop Up Power Supplies® on a number of projects now, and the new Travelodge hotel and adjoining events area really suited our in ground units. The leisure complex owners appreciated the fact the units can be operated with the lids locked down, which creates a safe and secure environment where shoppers can walk around safely.”

  • MULTI-MILLION POUND LUXURY OMAN DEVELOPMENT SPECIFIES 56 IN GROUND POWER UNITS FOR EFFECTIVE OUTDOOR POWER

Developers of the Al Mouj Muscat beachfront resort in Oman required an outdoor power source for its collection of luxurious facilities and amenities. Conditions and criteria for the power units were strict, as they had to not only had to blend in to the beautiful aesthetics of the resort, but had to offer a practical and sustainable power source that was fit for purpose.

Their search took them to the UK, where a collaborative effort from Pop Up Power Supplies® and Fabweld Steel Products (FSP) successfully specified a range of in ground power units for the luxury development.

AL MOUJ MUSCAT – LUXURY MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT BASED IN OMAN

Nestled on the stunning Oman waterfront, Al Mouj Muscat is a thriving community filled with a mix of residential and commercial buildings. The mixed-use development spans 6km along the beach front and offers exceptional living spaces and leisure facilities.

Incorporating around 6,000 new homes, international hotels, a 400 berth marina, an 18 hole PGA championship golf course, retail units, dining experiences and other leisure facilities, Al Mouj Muscat epitomises modern living by embracing community spirit.

IN GROUND POWER UNITS PROVIDE SAFE, SENSITIVE OUTDOOR POWER SUPPLY FOR AL MOUJ MUSCAT

A total of 56 in ground units were supplied to the Al Mouj Muscat development. The majority of which were located around The Wave Hotel – a seven story, two hundred bed luxury hotel.

Fabweld Steel Products and Pop Up Power Supplies® worked together to create bespoke in ground power units for the new build project. They were the power unit of choice by the developers of the Al Mouj Muscat project, as the power units can be operated with the lids locked down.

This prevents any public access which increases safety in public areas. The chances of electrocution are significantly reduced as people can’t access the power source, as only the cables protrude from the power unit. The cables will be covered by cable protectors which also reduces the potential tripping hazard, which is often the case with more traditional outdoor power supplies e.g. external generators.

The flip lid power units provide an effective power source for outdoor events, stalls and kiosks around the hotel perimeter.

    IN GROUND POWER UNITS

The in ground power units provided by Pop Up Power Supplies® and Fabweld Steel Products were bespoke units into which the developers were able to fit their dedicated equipment. The high-grade mild steel casing which protected the bespoke power requirements were hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461. This makes our range of In Ground Units particularly suitable for urban spaces, leisure facilities, town centres, shopping centres and other outdoor places.

George Parker, Director of Pop Up Power Supplies®, commented, “We were delighted to work with Fabweld Steel Products on the Al Mouj Muscat development. Our bespoke power units provided a sustainable, effective power supply that was sensitive to the beautiful surroundings of the luxury development.

It is great to see our pop up power units have worldwide appeal, with locations in the USA, Germany, France, the UAE and more specifying our units.”

Richard Hilton, Managing Director of Fabweld Steel Products, commented, “The Al Mouj Muscat is the Sultanate’s premier lifestyle and leisure destination and demands the highest standard of visual aesthetic for this development.

The beauty of the pop up power units is that they provide a discreet power source and the recessed lid accepts paving or an alternative infill to blend perfectly with the surrounding area.”

POP UP POWER UNITS FOR OUTSIDE SPACES

The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug sockets means the units are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, and other industry professionals. Our power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the suitable specification, they are delivered to site where all the contractor has to do then is to dig the required hole and install the unit.

  • SENSITIVE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR HERITAGE SITES

World Heritage Sites are places or buildings considered to be of outstanding universal value. Such places are either cultural or natural sites and are thought to have special importance for nations all over the world and their future generations.

The loss or deterioration of such prized locations is considered detrimental to the heritage of nations and their populations. As a result, organisations and conventions have been drawn up to protect the integrity of all Heritage Sites, particularly those which are World Heritage status.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) was established to preserve and protect such Heritage Sites. An international treaty was created in 1972 at the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, seeking to protect World Heritage Sites.

Part of the process of protecting such Heritage Sites includes restoration projects, where Sites’ facilities are updated and upgraded to maintain the integrity of such a cultural/natural site. Having an outdoor power supply that is sensitive to a Heritage Site is essential to preserve its condition and status.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of retractable service units that provide a safe and secure outdoor power supply, and crucially are sensitive to the local surroundings.

PROVIDING SAFE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR HERITAGE SITES

Our range of pop up power units are fully retractable. When they are needed, the units are raised out of the ground with a simple turning handle. And when they are not needed, they are simply lowered back into the ground. Our range of in ground units (or flip lid units) features a simple open-and-close mechanism where maintenance staff can access the power points via a lid. The power units can be operated with the lids locked down.

Another advantage of the pop up power units and in ground power units above is that their lids are recessed and can accommodate any infill surface material, whether it is stone, paving or grass. This means when the units are retracted they blend seamlessly with the local environment, upholding the integrity and aesthetics of Heritage Sites.

Pop Up Power Supplies’® retractable service units also bring other functional benefits to Heritage Sites, notably an increase in safety. Traditional outdoor power supplies, such as power generators, are hazardous in their operation. Not only can visitors trip over long lengths of trailing power wires, but they also can get dangerously close to the source of electricity i.e. the generator. This poses a potential electrocution hazard.

Our flip lid power units can be carefully positioned so they are able to power nearby outdoor stalls and kiosks easily, with the lid locked down. No trip hazard. No risk of electrocution to nearby visitors. The cables that protrude the units are generally short as kiosks are placed near the power units, and in any case are covered by cable protectors.

SAFE, SECURE OUTDOOR POWER SUPPLY TO CHISWICK HOUSE – GRADE 1 LISTED SITE

Chiswick House is a fantastic example of 18th-century British architecture and a popular tourist attraction. Set in glorious historic gardens, the Heritage Site underwent a £12 million restoration project in 2010.

The Chiswick House and Gardens Trust contacted Pop Up Power Supplies® with a requirement for an outdoor power source to place within the gardens. It was important that the units would not permanently impact on the beautiful aesthetics of the gardens, while being able to provide a safe source of electricity for the outdoor events they hold throughout the year.

Our range of PUPS01 pop up power units were specified and installed throughout the gardens, providing 16A or 32A power supply in both single and three phase sockets, all with RCBO protection. The units were simple to install and only required light excavation to install (in the form of a small digger).

Other palatial locations (beautiful sites but not Heritage status) where our retractable service units have been installed include Hampton Court Palace and Woburn Abbey. At Hampton Court Palace, PUPS02 pop up power units and PUP03 flip lid units were installed in the kitchen garden and PUPS Floorboxes were installed in the Tiltyard Function Room Garden. At Woburn Abbey, PUPS01 pop up plug sockets were installed.

POP UP POWER UNITS FOR OUTSIDE SPACES

The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug sockets means the units are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, and marina owners. Our power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the suitable specification, they are delivered to site where all the contractor has to do then is to dig the required hole and install the unit.

  • INNOVATIVE POWER SOLUTIONS FOR MARINAS AND MOORINGS

There are thousands of marinas and moorings across the UK and the rest of the world, all offering various levels of amenities and facilities for boat owners. Location plays a key part in the facilities offered by a marina, however one of the fundamental amenities required by boat owners is a source of electricity.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of retractable service units that provide a safe and reliable power supply for marinas and moorings. The pop up nature of our units means when they are needed they provide electricity for boats and various club house facilities within marinas, and when they are not needed they are simply lowered back into the ground. This ensures walkways and jetties are clear and safe for pedestrian access, which is a crucial factor being next to open water.

    UK BOATING INDUSTRY BOOMING

The popularity of marinas and moorings, particularly within the UK, is increasing at quite a rapid rate. This is due to a number of factors. The UK’s boat and yacht industry have seen sales surge, despite the difficult economic conditions we currently face. The weak pound has seen a 4.7% increase of overseas sales.

Another factor of marinas’ increasing popularity is the popularity of the ‘staycation’. UK residents are favouring to stay in the UK for their holidays, and are increasingly holidaying on barges, yachts, canal cruises and other watersports trips.

This increasing demand has meant marinas and moorings are investing in their facilities. Many are upgrading their club houses and other on-site facilities e.g. showers and toilets, to offer visitors a better experience.

Many marinas are now utilising their outdoor spaces with greater effect, and part of this process is various outdoor events and fairs. Stalls and kiosks provide visitors with food and entertainment. However powering these stalls has been quite difficult, as traditional power options e.g. generators, are noisy, smelly and are a hazard for nearby visitors.

PROVIDING SAFE OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR MARINAS AND MOORINGS

Pop Up Power Supplies® offer a range of pop up power units which provide a safe, secure outdoor power supply. They are perfect for areas within marinas such as their outdoor gardens around club houses and can power stalls and kiosks during special events. Our power units can also be positioned closer to the berths and jetties where they provide an outdoor power supply for the nearby boats.

Two of our retractable service units are popular among marinas, the pop up power units and the in ground units. The pop up power units, also known as retractable telescopic feeder pillars, provide a secure power source for marinas and can be raised and lowered easily with a detachable handle. This means staff at marinas are able to operate them easily. The power units are easy to install and only require light excavation.

Boat owners and marina staff simply raise the pop up power unit where they have access to a range of power sockets. These range from 16A to 12 5A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. When the boat owner departs the berth, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground until the next visitor, where they blend seamlessly with the local environment.

Our in ground units (also known as flip lid units) are also ideal for marinas and mooring facilities. One of the main advantage of these power units is that they can be operated with the lid locked down. This prevents any public access and reduces trip hazards on walkways, jetties and other areas around the marina facilities, which is a crucial factor being next to open water. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.

  • IN GROUND UNITS PROVIDE CONTINUOUS, SAFE OUTDOOR POWER

Our range of In Ground Power Units, or Flip Lid Units are an extremely safe option for powering outside spaces and public places. The main advantage to these power units is that they provide an outdoor power supply for stalls and kiosks, with a secure lid.

This lockable lid prevents public access increasing safety. Only the cables protrude from the power unit. The cables will be covered by cable protectors which also reduces any hazards.Architects, contractors, electrical engineers, local councils, shopping centre owners, stadium owners, facilities managers and other industry professionals benefit from specifying our in ground power units.

The covers of our in-ground units are recessed and can accommodate various surface materials as an infill for example paving and grass. Allowing each unit to appear seamless to the surrounding environments. A popular option for town centres, heritage sites, shopping centres, sports stadiums and other public facilities, where often it is imperative to uphold the local aesthetics.

There are different options of flip lid units available. The Slim IGU is 250mm deep and offers a single-phase incoming power supply. The Deep IGU is 750mm deep (with the same length and width as the Slim version – 386mm x 570mm) and features a single and three-phase power supply. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structures, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461. This makes our range of In Ground Units particularly suitable for outdoor spaces, festivals, market days and other public areas.

Other flip lid power units include the PUPS Floorbox, PUPS02 and the PUPS03. Offering 16A sockets in single phase with RCBO protection, PUPS Floorboxes offer a continuous power supply for outdoor areas where space is at a premium. A total of 8 Floorboxes were installed at Gallions Reach Shopping Centre to provide outdoor power for market stalls and small scale outdoor events around the precinct.

The PUPS02 range of outdoor power units come in three options – 4040, 5050 and the 7050. They offer a variety of power supplies, from 32 to 125 amps, and also has the option of water and data points. PUPS02 power units have been installed at locations throughout the UK, including Birmingham Airport, Preston Market, Folkestone Harbour and New Mersey Shopping Park.

The PUPS03 in ground unit again can provide a secure outdoor power source with the lid locked down. It provides a total of 63 amps in a single or three phase supply. The lid is raised with a semi-automatic gas piston for added convenience.

Our Flip Lid Power Units have been installed in public areas in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire. Council Planners were pleased with the power units as not only did they benefit from a safe source of outdoor electricity for the local market stalls, but there was minimal impact on the integrity and beauty of the local area – the covers of the IGUs are recessed so paving can be installed in the top, making them adaptable to the surrounding environment. They are also tested unfilled to FACTA Class B loadings.

  • POWERING OUTDOOR AREAS WITHIN SHOPPING CENTRES

The last few years have seen significant changes in how modern shopping centres operate. The huge growth of the online retail sector has created new challenges and opportunities for shopping centre owners and retailers, forcing them to offer a more innovative, immersive and social experience for shoppers.

Part of these developments include utilising outdoor spaces within shopping centres with boutique stalls, food kiosks, health and wellbeing booths and more. These stalls need an efficient, sustainable power source that provides an efficient power supply. But most importantly, it needs to be safe. Walkways and pedestrian access has to be as clear as possible ensuring minimal trip and electrocution hazards for shoppers.

We supply a range of safe and reliable outdoor power units for stalled areas within shopping centres. Two popular options include our Pop Up Power Units, the retractable nature means they can be raised from the ground when power is needed. Then they can be lowered back into the ground when they are finished with. The other option is our range of Flip Lid (or In Ground Units) which can provide electricity with the lids locked down.

The popularity of boutique stalls has been significant over the last five to ten years. Consumers are preferring more bespoke and unique products. World food and cultures are increasingly popular and food kiosks offering a wide variety of food products have seen a surge in demand. Finally, consumers are spending more of their hard-earned money on health and wellbeing. Many health booths are populating shopping centres now offering various hair and beauty services. The increase in stalls and kiosks within shopping centres is a huge positive. However, it puts a significant strain on the power facilities and local infrastructure of shopping centres. Stalls simply cannot plug in to local power sources as electricity outlets are few and far between in outdoor areas within shopping centres. When they were designed there would have been no plans to utilise the outdoor spaces.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative power units that offer a safe, secure electricity supply to outdoor areas within shopping centres. The electrical feeder pillars provide a protected source of electricity and data points to help power stalls and kiosks.

Our retractable service units have been specified on many shopping centre refurbishment projects across the UK, including PUPS02 Flip Lid Units at New Mersey Shopping Park (Liverpool); PUPS3030 Floorboxes at Gallions Reach Shopping Park (London); and PUPS01 Pop Up Power Units at Rivergate Shopping Centre (Peterborough).

The PUPS02 In Ground Units at New Mersey Shopping Park provide power distribution and are totally hidden even in operation. The cover for the power units are recessed and filled with matching surface finish. Just the power cables protrude out of the units and run to nearby stalls and kiosks, but are safely guarded with cable protectors.

A total of eight PUPS3030 Floorboxes were specified and installed at Galleons Reach Shopping Park, London. They are installed around the perimeter of the site giving access to electricity from multiple points. The outdoor area within the shopping park is used for market stalls and small scale entertainment events.

The PUPS3030 Floorbox is manufactured entirely of stainless steel and each of the units was fitted with 2 x 16A single phase IP67 sockets with individual RCBOs. Some of the units were also supplied with a water connection so maintenance staff were able to connect hoses for the watering system.

The PUPS01 Pop Up Power Units at Rivergate Shopping Centre, Peterborough, are installed in the outdoor square and provide electricity for market stalls and food kiosks. They can be raised and lowered easily with a detachable handle, so on the days when there are no market stalls/events the units are lowered back into the ground. Therefore they pose no on-going risk to the public, as well as keeping the units safe from vandalism.

They provide power sockets ranging from 16A to 12 5A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. Housed within a sturdy concrete and cast iron casing, the power units are simply lowered into position (with only light excavation needed to dig the hole).

The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug socket units in refurbishment and new build shopping centres mean they are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, shopping centre owners and many more industry professionals.

Our range of retractable and flip lid power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the suitable specifications, they are delivered to site where all the contractor has to do then is to dig the required hole and install the unit.

  • INNOVATIVE POWER SOLUTIONS FOR OUTDOOR MARKET DAYS

Traditional market days are commonplace in towns and cities throughout the UK. Buyers and sellers come together forming a lively outdoor retail environment and strong community spirit. Councils encourage such market days for economic and social benefits, however they have strict guidelines and rules for traders to follow.

Public safety is crucial for outdoor market events. Pedestrian access has to be clear with no tripping hazards, and the risk of electrocution has to be curtailed. Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a catalogue of retractable service units that provide a reliable and effective power supply for outdoor spaces for market days and events. The innovative power units provide a source of electricity and data points to help power market stalls.

Our flip lid units can be operated with the lids locked down therefore preventing any public access or trip/electrocution hazards, and our pop up power units can be raised and lowered from the ground easily. When they are not needed they are simply lowered back into the ground ensuring clear, safe walkways. Outdoor markets play a huge part in community life throughout towns and cities in the UK. Traditional market stalls selling local food produce, craft goods, clothes, toys, artisanal products, and much more are hugely popular in today’s retail society. The increasing popularity of Christmas Markets also highlights the status of the outdoor events, attracting millions of visitors every year to the festive stalls. Pop Up Power Supplies® provide a range of innovative power solutions for outdoor markets. Our pop up power units provide a safe and dependable power source to many markets throughout the UK.

Council planners and market organisers favour our power units compared to traditional generators, due to the retractable nature of the units and the increased safety they bring to market events. The pop up power units, also known as Retractable Telescopic Feeder Pillars, maintain a safe, secure power source for market stalls and can be raised and lowered easily with a detachable handle. They are easy to install into town squares and only require light excavation.

During market days, stall owners and traders simply raise the pop up power unit where they have access to a range of power sockets. These range from 16A to 12 5A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. When the market event finishes, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground until the next event, where they blend seamlessly with the local environment.

We also supply in ground units (also known as flip lid units) which are ideal for traditional market events. The main advantage of these power units is that they can be operated with the lid locked down. This means they can provide a stable power supply to outdoor markets and stalls preventing any public access and reducing trip hazards. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.

Our retractable service power units have been installed in many town and city centres across the UK to power market stalls and events. Our Flip Lid Power Units were installed in public areas in the town of Stamford, Lincolnshire, for their market events they hold on a weekly basis. Council Planners were pleased with the power units as not only did they benefit from a protected source of outdoor electricity for the local market stalls, but there was minimal impact on the integrity and beauty of the local area.

A range of our pop up power units were installed in Rugby town centre, including the PUPS01 and PUPS05 units. This is a historic market event and has been trading since 1235 under Royal Charter. The units were installed in 2005 and have been used three days a week for thirteen years (for market events). They are still in good working order and provide a sufficient outdoor power supply for market stalls.

Our range of power bollards have also been installed to power outdoor market events. A number of our bollard units were installed in a public area outside the local civic centre. The power units were specified in a Button Top Supply Bollard with hatch closure, and have very limited impact on the aesthetics of the area as they are placed around the perimeter area next to walls. The power bollards are a popular choice of street furniture as they are elegant in design as well as being robust and hard-wearing (they are constructed using AISI 304 or AISI 316 stainless steel).

Our range of power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the required specifications, they are delivered to the site and the unit installed. The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug sockets means the units are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, local councils, estates departments in universities, urban designers and many more engineering professionals.

  • OUTDOOR POWER SOLUTIONS FOR MODERN SPORTS STADIUMS

Modern sports stadiums are continually developing. Architects and facilities managers are constantly redefining design and functionality parameters. Technology and commercial generation are two of the biggest influences in such developments in stadium design.

But how do stadium owners optimise their arena space? Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative retractable service units which provide a safe and secure outdoor power source. This source of electricity is crucial for power during events such as LED floodlighting or digital information displays, and also aids maintenance for sports pitches for example UV lighting rigs or sprinkler systems.

Stadiums of any sport or recreational event have a duty to guarantee spectator and staff safety, and are subject to strict rules and regulations in their design and operation. For example the floodlights must be supported by a secondary power source. Various electrical equipment around pitches, running tracks or other sporting areas has to minimise any potential hazards – such as trip or electrocution risks from trailing wires.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative pop up power units which are ideal for use in all outdoor areas within sports stadiums and arenas. Not only do they provide a reliable and secure source of electricity, the power units are retractable in nature. The range of Pop Up Units can be easily raised to provide a power source, and when they are not needed they are simply lowered back into the ground, blending seamlessly with their immediate surroundings. Our range of In-Ground Units (or Flip Lid Units) are able to provide a power supply with their lids locked down.

OUR POWER UNITS INSTALLED AT CHELSEA FC AND MARY PETERS TRACK

We supplied nine of our PUPS01 power units to Chelsea Football Club, and they were installed around the perimeter of the pitch. The lids of the unit can be combined with the turf therefore when they are lowered into the ground they appear seamless with the pitch. When ground staff work begin maintenance on the pitch they raise the units (with a simple detachable handle) where they provide electricity for the UV lighting equipment.

Our Flip Lid Units were installed at Mary Peters Track in Belfast. The track, which provides athletes a place to train and coach required a range of electrical equipment which needed power. For example lighting rigs and digital information displays. The In Ground Units provide a safe and secure outdoor power source for the track, with the added benefit that they operate with the lids locked down. The power sockets are safely located within the high-grade mild steel structure, which is hot dip galvanised to BS EN: ISO1461.

MULTI-PURPOSE STADIUM DESIGNS AND THEIR POWER CONSIDERATIONS

Modern stadiums are now much more, they are multi-use venues, where they not only combine different sporting events but are also host a whole range of entertainment and music fixtures. An increasing number of football stadiums have running tracks around the perimeter of the pitch; some stadiums host both football and rugby matches; and there is a growing trend for football stadiums to incorporate American Football (NFL) matches, due to the increasing popularity of the sport within the UK. Designing stadiums for such a variety of purposes notably puts pressures and stresses on the operational maintenance of the stadium. Our range of pop up power units help to alleviate such pressures, as they are able to provide a reliable source of power in order to effectively maintain pitch surfaces.

Our pop up power units and flip lid units also provide an innovative power solution for entertainment events. Music artists, comedians and other acts often use stadiums nowadays to host their events. Such events require power sources around the pitch area for lighting, speaker systems and large television screens.

  • POP UP POWER SUPPLIES® PROVIDE SAFE POWER SOLUTIONS FOR BUSY OUTDOOR AREAS AND PUBLIC SPACES

Pop Up Units, also known as Retractable Telescopic Feeder Pillars, are incredibly versatile and provide electricity connection or data points for public areas.

They can be raised and lowered easily with a detachable handle, so when they are no longer needed they are lowered back into the ground allowing no on-going risk to the public, as well as keeping the units safe from weather elements and vandalism.

They provide power sockets ranging from 16A to 12 5A power supply in both single and three phase, all with RCBO protection. Housed within a sturdy concrete and cast iron casing, the power units are simply lowered into position (with only light excavation needed to dig the hole).

The unit covers are made up of stainless steel AISI304 and offer significant protection to the power units when they are fully retracted. Operating the pop up electric sockets is easy – they are simply raised and lowered using a detachable handle.

The power units are supplied complete, therefore once they have been designed to the required specification, they are delivered to site. The contractor is required to simply dig a hole and install the unit. The simplicity of specifying the pop up plug socket means the units are a favourite with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, developers, local councils, estates departments in universities, urban designers and many more engineering professionals.

  • POP UP POWER SUPPLIES® PROVIDE A RANGE OF INNOVATIVE OUTDOOR POWER UNITS TO HELP CIVIL ENGINEERS POWER BUILT-UP ENVIRONMENTS OF THE FUTURE

The built environment that currently exists within the UK is continually changing and adapting to external influences – whether they are technological advances, economic conditions, political influences or social demands.

Developments to the infrastructure are crucial not only to the economy but also socially – enhancing the quality of life for the people who live here. Innovation is a key driver for such developments and advancing technology plays a big role in making urban places safer and more inspiring. Civil engineers continuously source the construction landscape for products to use which benefit their civil projects.

Pop Up Power Supplies® supply a range of innovative and practical retractable service units that supply a stable, effective power source for outdoor events and urban spaces. Their design means the units can be lowered back into the ground when not in use therefore minimising their impact on local surroundings.

A range of pop up power supply units were recently on show on our stand at Civils Expo 2017, part of UK Construction Week. Visitors to the stand appreciated how the power units can be designed and integrated to fit any outdoor space and provide a safe and secure power source.

POWERING THE WAY FOR A STRONGER UK BUILT ENVIRONMENT

The UK construction landscape is looking positive going into the final quarter of 2017. The number and value of construction contracts, as well as output levels, has increased throughout 2017 and shows signs of continuing into 2018.

The infrastructure is experiencing continued development and expansion, where civil engineers, architects, contractors work together to create more efficient buildings, transport systems, industrial structures and urban spaces, to cope with society’s growing demands.

Town centres are being re-developed by councils in an attempt to drive local shoppers back to the high street to favour local, independent retailers and cafes. Here, market days, craft and food festivals, charity fundraisers and more events are held in an attempt to engage communities and encourage shoppers to visit.

Part of such town centre re-generation projects include specifying an outdoor electricity supply to power such events.

INNOVATIVE POWER SUPPLIES FOR OUTDOOR PLACES AND URBAN SPACES

The PUPS01 pop up power units installed at Covent Garden are situated in the cobbled piazza area, which holds various stalls and events every week. When the power units are needed, they are raised out of the ground and provide a combination of 16A and 32A electric sockets, in single and three phase, with RCBO protection. When the events finish and the piazza clears of stalls, the power units are simply lowered back into the ground where they have no impact on the historic aesthetics of the piazza area.

The In-Ground Units (also known as Flip Lid Units) installed at Stamford town centre solved a problem for the Council Planners, as they required an outdoor power source to replace all of the unsightly power cables used to power the market stalls.

Civil Engineers, architects, contractors and urban designers appreciate the functionality of the power units together with the fact they are sensitive to their local environment as they can be lowered into the ground when not in use.
